Chuck Schumer & Hillary Clinton Threatening to Withhold Support of Israel

This was the title of a mass email I received on August 2, 2006. The text follows:

THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE
- PLEASE READ, SIGN, AND FORWARD:

New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton are threatening to oppose the re-appointment of John Bolton.

John Bolton is the United State's Ambassador to the United Nations.

Inarguably, Ambassador Bolton is one of the best friends that the State of Israel and American Jews have in the world today. Ambassador Bolton has been both focused and unwavering in dealing with issues related to Iran's nuclear threat, eliminating international support of terrorism, and the most recent Hamas & Hezbollah aggressions against Israeli cities and their civilian populations.

Senators Schumer and Clinton must be told in no uncertain terms that this is not a partisan issue and their support cannot be subjected to and held hostage to political bickering.

Our website, www.SupportJohnBolton.com contains a petition, and automatically transmits a personalized letter to Senator Schumer and Senator Clinton.

Tell Schumer and Clinton to RECONSIDER THEIR POSITIONS ON THIS MATTER, OR RISK LOSING OUR SUPPORT AND OUR VOTES.

I thought this was an unfair slam, that it wasn't about getting John Bolton confirmed but about slamming two of the Senators with strong pro-Israel voting records because they were Democrats. But I didn't think that it was in the interest of Jews or of Israel to respond to this shameful attempt at disunity then.

Personally, I thought that Bolton was not the right person for the job. His past inability to get along with people was not the thing that I saw would make an effective diplomat, and the recess appointment was a sham. But I hadn't seen much to object to in Bolton's conduct during his recess appointment. Now I'm not sure; if the tough guy approach produced such a one-sided cease fire resolution maybe another strategy is needed? Maybe Schumer and Clinton were right after all? Nevertheless I can't totally blame Bolton; he takes his marching orders from Bush.
